KETO VS CARNIVORE

Ketogenc Diet

  • Keto is a low-carbohydrate diet originally developed as a medical treatment for epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

  • Low carbohydrate diet.  Focus is on consuming more protein and fat and less than 50 grams per day of carbohydrates.

  • Keto-friendly fruits and vegetables depend on the amount of carbohydrates they contain.

  • Avoid or limit processed foods, i.e. deli meats, pre-packaged foods, cereals, condiments, and drinks.

  • A type of keto diet that excludes all vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts.

Processed Foods

In ketosis, your liver uses fat from your body and diet to create ketones that your brain can use for energy. Fat also fuels your muscles.

Ketones, or ketone bodies, are made by your liver from fat that you eat as well as from your own body fat. The three ketone bodies are beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate, and acetone (although acetone is technically a breakdown product of acetoacetate).

The liver produces ketones on a regular basis even when eating a higher-carb diet. This happens mainly overnight while asleep but only in tiny amounts. However, when glucose and insulin levels decrease, such as on a carb-restricted diet, the liver ramps up its production of ketones to provide energy for the brain.

Once the level of ketones in the blood reaches a certain threshold, a person is in nutritional ketosis. Although both fasting and a keto diet achieve ketosis, only a keto diet is sustainable over long periods of time. In fact, it appears to be a healthy way to eat that people can potentially follow indefinitely.

KETO AND CARNIVORE are diets that cause the body to release ketones into the bloodstream. Most cells prefer to use blood sugar, which comes from carbohydrates, as the body's main source of energy. In the absence of circulating blood sugar from food, we start breaking down stored fat into molecules called ketone bodies. The process is called KETOSIS. Once in ketosis, most cells will use ketone bodies and fat to generate energy until we start eating carbohydrates again. The shift, from using circulating glucose to breaking down stored fat as a source of energy, usually happens over two to four days of eating fewer than 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. Keep in mind that this is a highly individualized process, and some people need a more restricted diet to start producing enough ketones.
